How to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans: Part 1

Medicare is complicated. It’s a fact. So at "Day 2," we like to dedicate time to making
sure people really understand Medicare before they select a plan. After all, there’s nothing more important than your health.

 Background:

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are a popular way to simplify coverage while saving on out-of-pocket costs. With an MA plan, all of your benefits - including your Part D drug coverage - come from one plan and one company. Most of these plans offer all of this at a $0 Monthly premium. With that said, there are a lot of variations in those $0 premium Medicare Advantage plans that can catch people off guard if they don’t know what to look for. That’s what we’ll address in this series.

Part 1:Copays

While that $0 premium is attractive, that doesn’t mean you’ll pay nothing for your care.payment_icon_small.jpg
That’s why copays are so important to look at when choosing an MA plan. Especially when it comes to primary care physician visit copays, since that’s the service people generally use the most.

Check to see how much you’ll pay per visit. While a $45 copay may not seem too bad, there could be a plan that offers copays as low as $10, and that savings will add up over the years.

Nearly all plan materials highlight copays. Look these over. While there are other factors that play into which plan you should choose, copays are always a good place to start.

Stay tuned for the next part of our series where we’ll discuss the importance of reviewing a plan’s Maximum Out-of-Pocket (MOOP) limit before making your decision.
