Walk this Way...to Control Blood Sugar Levels

We hear a lot about walking these days. From reducing stress to improving heart health, there’s no shortage of reasons to take a daily stroll. Fortunately, science has Footprints_2.pngfound yet another way walking can improve your health — just in time for spring.
If you’re diabetic or pre-diabetic, this is especially important for you.

Researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services reported in Diabetes Care that walking after meals actually helps control blood sugar levels. In fact, a short 15-minute walk after meals is better for your overall health than an hour-long walk once a day.

While researchers suggest striving for walks after each meal, they also say that taking a 15-minute stroll after your biggest meal of the day is most important. Start out by walking for 15 minutes after your biggest meal, and then try to add in walks after the smaller meals as well. By doing this, you’ll naturally help control your blood sugar levels while getting in 45 minutes of exercise a day.
